GTTG film review: Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again

Our review rating (out of 5): ♥♥♥
Plot summary:  Continuing on from the previous movie, Sophie is renovating her mother Donna’s hotel on the small Greek island of Kalokairi, with a little help from some old friends. The story features flashbacks depicting how Donna first came to the island and how she met Sophie’s three potential fathers – Sam, Bill and Harry.

What we liked: One word: Cher! Cher is no doubt one of the big star attractions in this film and while she doesn’t appear until quite late on, she’s great fun and makes a big impact when she arrives! The musical numbers, despite a lot of the songs being less-known, are all fantastic and it’s great to see the old characters back, as well as some new ones who don’t disappoint. Lily James as young Donna in particular really lights up the screen. We’re glad that “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen” are included again – we defy you not to want to sing along!

What we didn’t like: The charm and light-hearted nature of the first film that really captured the audiences aren’t quite hit in the same way in this sequel. Mamma Mia: here We Go Again is a bit more melancholy when it doesn’t need to be and that tone runs through most of the movie unfortunately. It is still entertaining but the first one is definitely better!
